Twitter creates PR disaster for Habitat

Its interesting that yesterday I wrote a post about the fact that company’s need to start taking Twitter seriously and evaluate individuals within the company that have access or have created these accounts.

As if to back up my thought process, Sky News have just published the article below that clearly emphasises the need for companys to start evaluating their Twitter communication strategy!

UK Firm’s Mistweetment Of Iran Is PR Disaster

Furniture chain Habitat has been accused of hijacking global interest in the bloody protests in Iran to market its spring collection on Twitter. The company has been caught using online search terms connected to the violent clashes to promote its Twitter feed.

Using the name @HabitatUk, they “tweeted” updates about new products on the site. But they also added “hashtags” – keywords that help Twitter users locate posts on specific themes – such as #Iran.

Habitat Twitter blunder...

That meant that people searching for information about the deadly violence and mass protests in Tehran following the country’s disputed election came up with posts advertising Habitat’s goods.
