The Solio on thin ice…

Published - Thursday, 09 July, 2009

Has anyone been watching the series on BBC Two called ‘On Thin Ice’? It follows Ben Fogle and James Cracknell on a gruelling adventure to reach the South Pole. It took them 18 days to ski across 474 miles of frozen wilderness, finally arriving at the pole on the 22nd of January 09. It is an unbelievable achievement…coming back without frostbite is a feat in itself when at times the temperature dropped below -50c!!

The programme ‘Everest ER’ has also been on recently which tracks the medics who volunteer at the World’s highest clinic. It amazes me how many people attempt to climb Everest who perhaps shouldn’t. They are either unprepared or extremely deluded. Do they not realise how serious the consequences could be?! One group of climbers left a member of their party alone on a part of the mountain known as the death zone. Luckily she thawed out and lived to tell the story with all fingers and toes intact.

My common interest in both of these programmes is that our client Better Energy Systems provided Solio solar powered chargers to Dr Ian Davis, a medic on the South Pole race and Dr. Luanne Freer head of medical staff at Everest ER. The Solio charger harnesses the power from the sun and converts it into electricity to power a variety of handheld devices. Both parties used it to keep the batteries in their mobile phones, iPods and cameras alive. It is a great emergency source of power. The Solio led the charge to the summit on this occasion, it was the only gadget to survive the cold.
