Is 3D Rugby Set for the Sin Bin Already?
Published - Wednesday, 10 February, 2010Last weekend saw the start of the RBS Six Nations Rugby Championship and, for those who just can’t get enough of extra dimensional occasions, the first ever 3D screening of a rugby match.
The media was buzzing with news of the project, in which 40 Odeon and Cineworld cinemas across the UK had pledged to show the England v Wales clash in glorious 3D. The company behind the initiative, Inition, were also talking it up just last week and making us all question the wisdom of watching the match like normal people in the pub or at home.
I’d been looking forward to hearing how successful it was, and whether any Welsh fans had felt like they too had been felled by Alun-Wyn Jones’ errant leg, but so far nothing. Which seems strange.
Whilst I don’t intend to criticise the brains behind the operation, as 3D sport definitely seems to have captured the media’s interest of late, I do wonder how many people came through the ‘turnstiles’? Had the screening been a success I’d have expected to be reading about it before 4 days had passed.
So, are we all tiring of 3D already, or are rugby fans just not the right audience? The next screening is February 27th, for the England v Ireland match so we’ll see then.
I’m still waiting for WWE in 3D – now that I would watch.

I tried to get tickets for the screening in Covent Garden but it had sold out. They have now all sold out as far as I know but I haven’t heard any feedback yet. Would be interesting to know what people thought of it. If its anything like the Avatar experience, you need 20 minutes to get over the motion sickness feelings!
